Description

Minkowski's Butterfly is a bipolar planetary nebula 2100 light years away in Ophiuchus.  It is a difficult target at a size of 17 arc sec and a magnitude of 14.7.  In the center two stars orbit each other in a circle about the size of Plutos orbit.  This image is a 3 hour Ha.  These stars cast off the gaseous envelope forming the bipolar structure.  This object is rarely imaged and the best known image is from HST
