NGC 2070, The Tarantula Nebula, in the Large Megellanic Cloud (LMC) is the First Light Image for the FSQ106N / SBIG ST-10XE installed at PROMPT 2, CTIO. It was first cataloged to be a star, 30 Doradus, then called the Looped Nebula by Herschel. This object at 160,000 light years distant would actualy cast shadows on earth at night if it was at the distance of the Orion Nebula, 1500 light years. The illumination comes from ultraviolet radiation from hot young massive stars embedded in the nebula. Click here to see the narrowband version. |
